The Rapturous South
| My journey within the South started during my younger years, but it wasn’t until much later that I truly experienced the region. Even now, my understanding of the South remains somewhat elusive. I made it a point to understand this space by exploring its places. For me, the most effective means of grasping a place is by immersing myself in it, by observing and looking at it intently. I needed something more. That’s when I turned to cycling. It provides a unique vantage point, revealing details and perspectives that might otherwise remain hidden – it’s the window to the impossible view. My chosen route in the South often takes me through diverse environments. It begins in the urban sprawl, transitions through the suburban landscapes, enters the semi-rural expanse, and eventually meanders back to the urban core.

The semi-rural south stands out as a unique conjunction of symbols, sites, and icons that tell a story of the region. The project hopes to capture and convey the essence of the semi-rural south through its most telling icons.

Territory | It’s a territory where two socio-economic symbols of domesticity take center stage: the mobile home and the house on the hill. These two distinct yet interconnected icons reveal profound insights into the fabric of the South’s landscape.

Mechanics | The series of drawings represent the design of a new mobile home that adapts to the surrounding landscape which begins to reveals the intricate relationships between built form and natural context. At the core of the design lies a deep understanding of the site’s topography, climate, and ecology. The plan drawing reveals a series of interventions that work with the natural topography of the land. The home’s structural system is carefully integrated into the site, with tracks and positions systems. The plan reveals a complex system of rainwater harvesting and gray-water tanks, which is vital for reducing the home’s impact on the environment and conserving natural resources.

Components | The axonometric drawing of the home provides a view of the design that make this home harmoniously connected to nature. At the core of the design is a deep respect for the natural context of the site. The drawing shows how the home’s form and orientation are carefully crafted to respond to the site’s topography, solar exposure, and prevailing winds. The roof is carefully angled to maximize solar gain for passive heating and to capture rainwater for reuse. The home’s facades are designed to optimize views and natural light, while also minimizing heat gain and glare.

Community | The site drawings prioritize a collaborative and sustainable community that encourages environmental responsibility, social interaction, and personal growth. The commune provides residents with a diverse range of living experiences that can adapt to the changing needs and desires of its occupants.
